This is the stuff of daydreams… have you ever dreamed of living in a lighthouse on the west coast of Ireland? Clare Island Lighthouse is now on the market for any would-be lighthouse keeper.
The restored lighthouse is located on top of the wild cliffs of Clare Island, just off the coast of County Mayo. This is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt islands in Ireland with a year round population of about 160 residents. Despite it’s small island population, Clare Island boasts a community centre with bar and restaurant, sports hall and a health centre as well as a regular ferry service to the mainland. (Although, there’ll be no need for the ferry if you have your own helicopter… thanks to the lighthouse’s convenient helipad.)

Clare Island Lighthouse is steeped in history dating back to 1806. Thanks to it’s position on the north coast of the island you’ll be able to enjoy unobstructed views of Achill Island and the Atlantic Ocean. As you’d expect from a lighthouse… these stunning panoramic sea views can be enjoyed from almost every window (including the bedrooms, living rooms and sauna!).
The lighthouse has been renovated to a high standard throughout- which includes a main house, a collection of cottages, two towers, converted outbuildings, over 2 acres of grounds, a sauna and a helipad. Despite the modern renovations, you’ll find plenty of character and original features throughout the property. The lighthouse has solid wood flooring throughout and traditional open fireplaces for warming yourself on wild winter nights!
You’ll find a total of 9 bedrooms amongst it’s collection of cottages and outbuildings as well as a conservatory that acts as a suntrap and the ideal place to enjoy the panoramic sea views.
If you’re looking to buy a readymade holiday business, Clare Island Lighthouse lends itself perfectly with a number of self contained guest cottages, suites and a track record. The current owners have run the lighthouse as a successful business for 12 years with a total of 5 guest suites and dining options on offer.
We’re happy to be corrected, but… we think it’s safe to say this must be one of the only lighthouses in Ireland with it’s own sauna. A later addition to the original function of the building… but a welcome one! Originally an outbuilding, it was converted into a luxury guest suite with sauna, private patio area and sea views across to Croagh Patrick.
Whether you dream of running a unique lighthouse holiday business or want to relocate to a quiet corner of the Irish coast… Clare Island Lighthouse offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to buy a historic nautical landmark.
